Everyday Movement

Barefoot Time, in the Right Places

A little barefoot time can belong in an ordinary day. Start with the space, stay close and let comfort guide the moment.

Barefoot Time, in the Right Places

Check the space.

Think about the surface, temperature and surroundings.

Stay close.

Keep the moment supervised and comfortable.

Add protection.

Use shoes when the setting calls for them.

Start with the setting.

Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust's children's foot-care guidance encourages walking barefoot where it is safe.[1] That last part matters: the place and the moment should suit the child.

We think of barefoot time as one part of everyday life. A familiar play space or a quiet pause on a picnic blanket can be enough to enjoy being together without shoes.

Our everyday space check.

  1. Look at the surface.Choose a clean, dry area with secure footing. Check for sharp objects, rough patches and anything a curious toddler might pick up.
  2. Notice the conditions.Check that the surface is a comfortable temperature. Grass, decking and outdoor mats still deserve a check before little feet explore.
  3. Follow their comfort.Stay nearby. Pause or put shoes on if the surface is uncomfortable, the child wants to stop or the setting changes.

This is Pedibare's practical interpretation of safe-space guidance, rather than a prescribed exercise routine.

Does barefoot time mean skipping shoes outdoors?

No. The AAP recommends protective first shoes for outdoor walking, with a comfortable fit, flexibility and nonskid soles.[2] Use shoes on unfamiliar or unsuitable surfaces and when protection is needed.

If your child has specific footwear advice from a healthcare professional, follow that guidance.

Make room for both.

Bare feet in a suitable space. Shoes for the next outing. Pedibare's wide toe shape and flexible construction reflect our wish to give little feet room within everyday footwear.
